Content and Resell Rights

There is a lot of talk these days about content and the resell rights associated with the content. Now, content can be anything from Articles, eBooks, eZines, and sometimes software. I think it is important that you understand the various types and what they mean.

These are general descriptions. Some products may come with slight variations of these rights. You should look for a license file that should detail all the rights you have with each product.  If you can't find a license file and are not sure, then you should contact the author.

Resell or resale Rights - When you get a product with these rights, then you, as the owner of this product, now have the rights to sell or give this product away. usually the person you get the product from will tell you if there are any price limits that you can sell the product for. You can sell it for whatever you want or you can give this away as part of a product, or membership. However, you do not have any rights to modify the content.

Basic Resell Rights - You have resell rights to the product and can resell the product, but you can not sell or give away the resell rights. So, your customers don't get any resell rights when they buy from you.

Master Resell Rights - These rights are similar to the Resell Rights, except that you have the right to resell the rights.  This allows the people getting the product from you to have "resell rights". You still do not have any rights to modify the content.

Giveaway Rights - You have the rights to give the product away, but you can not sell the product or modify the content.

Private Label Rights (PLR) - These rights give you the ability to modify the content as you see fit.  You can add links to products that you sell, or change the wording. You can add or delete information from the content you receive. With PLR, you can distribute the content as the author.

Content for Reprint - This content can also be a great resource to add content to your website. But all you can do is put this on your website.  You usually are not allowed to change an links or add your own to this content. You must leave the signature block as is.

Public Domain - Public Domain is not really a license. It is similar to Private Label Rights in that there is not a copyright on the content. But, there are several variations that do put restrictions on the content, distribution,  sale, and licensing of the content.  Some of the more popular variations are GNU General Public License, FreeBSD License, and the Open Source License to name a few. So, check to see if some public domain content has some over ridding license.
